“When should I schedule my session?”
The sooner the better. For maternity sessions, it is best to schedule while in your second trimester since you never know if baby may decide to come early. We can sometimes accommodate on short notice, so it never hurts to check with us about our availability. Priority is always given to newborn sessions, so it is more likely we would have to turn down a maternity session or other type of session if it is not scheduled in advance.
Newborn sessions should be scheduled before the baby arrives to ensure we have availability before the baby is 2 weeks old. The best time to capture a newborn is between 6 and 14 days of age. Our calendar does often fill up in advance so please contact us as early as possible. If your baby has already arrived, or arrived prematurely, we may still be able to fit you in if you contact us right away.
Baby milestones sessions can be captured any time between 3 and 10 months, and some good milestones to photograph are tummy time sessions (3-4 months), sitting up sessions (6-7 months) and first birthday sessions.
“Are props included?”
Yes! We provide everything needed for your newborn portrait session, and most everything you see in our portfolio is available for use. For maternity sessions, we do not generally include props but you are welcome to bring something personal if you’d like, such as an ultrasound picture or baby shoes. Baby milestone sessions (3-10 months) are also done with minimal props, but if you have something in mind we are always welcome to ideas. For first birthday sessions, we can provide the props for the cake smash but not the cake itself (due to potential allergies). Cake smashes can take place in our studio or outdoors.
“What should we wear?”
This will vary from family to family and by session type, and is something we will discuss after you book your session. Most of the time, solid, soft, neutral colors are recommended such as whites, grays, and tan/khakis. I will send you a guide for the type of session you are booking, which will have tips for how to dress. You can also view our Pinterest boards, which are full of ideas.
For maternity sessions, we have maternity gowns that are available for your use.
“What equipment do you use?”
Canon 5D Mark III Cameras x2 – I always carry a primary and a backup in case of camera malfunction Canon 35mm f/1.4L lens, primarily used for studio newborn, maternity, and in home lifestyle portraits Canon 50mm f/1.2L lens, backup for newborns, sometimes used for older babies or maternity in the studio. Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, for newborn details Canon 85mm f/1.8, used occasionally for maternity and outdoor baby pictures Canon 135mm f/2L, used occasionally for outdoor maternity portraits Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II, This is my favorite outdoor lens and my most often used lens for outdoor maternity, baby, and family portraits
“Can my spouse/other children/dog be included?”
We do have options available for both maternity and newborn that may include spouses and/or children. Please understand that we do not specialize in family or child photography. Our main focus during a maternity session is going to be mostly on mama and mom/dad. We don’t mind including siblings in a few shots, but if you are looking for more of a focus on the children/family as a whole, I would recommend choosing a photographer that specializes in families/children.
Same thing with the newborn session, our focus here is mainly on the newborn. A few family/sibling pictures can be added depending on your package, but we do ask that the sibling(s) be brought to the session separately for their pictures. Since the session is 2-4 hours, we ask that older children not stay the full time, as it hinders our ability to provide amazing images of your new baby.
Sorry, we do not allow pets (unless you schedule a lifestyle session in your home). As much as we love them, it’s just too difficult to coordinate and we aim to keep the studio allergy-friendly.
“Will you come to our home for the session?”
In home photography sessions are available for those looking for a more natural and less posed look. These are typically called ‘lifestyle‘ sessions. We are more than happy to offer these sessions for maternity and first year milestone sessions. Lifestyle sessions are also available for newborn sessions, but this means mostly non-posed. If you are interested in a posed newborn session with or without props, we do ask that you come to our home studio for the session. We use very large high quality studio lighting, backdrops, and props that do not travel.
“Will you provide location suggestions for our maternity session?”
Absolutely! We have many beautiful locations we use on a regular basis, and once we find out more about the kind of look you want, we will provide a great recommendation.
“How would you describe your style?”
My style is fun, colorful, modern, a bit whimsical, but also timeless. While I love an occasional bold black and white image, most of my pictures will be full of rich colors. My photos are highly posed, and are lit and angled just right. I give a lot of direction, which most clients find helpful since so many people feel awkward in front of the camera. My editing techniques are bold and clean. I provide as much or as little retouching as you would like.
“Why is custom photography so expensive?”
Custom photography may seem expensive to someone that is used to high volume photography companies. The truth is, these companies make their profit by charging cheap prices and turning over as many people as they can get in the door. Their focus is on being as quick as possible. I’m sure everyone has had this experience. You sit in a waiting room with several other families, while your kids complain non stop and jump around messing up their clothes and hair. You finally get in front of the camera, the photographer yells “Say cheese!”, snaps 3-4 shots, and sends you on your way. They don’t take the time to get to know your family. They don’t care if your child just gave a completely fake smile-as-big-as-you-can cheesy face. This type of photography may work for some – and this is fine – but some people want more.
This is where we come in. Instead of photographing dozens of families in one day, we photograph 2-3 families per week. This ensures we have all the time needed to give you not only the very best pictures of your family, but an experience that is enjoyable from start to finish. Yes, this means you are paying more for a top of the line experience. It’s going to The Melting Pot instead of McDonalds. Saks Fifth Avenue instead of Sears. It’s not only about the product (which is ultimately better), but also the experience, the atmosphere, the customer service. Sessions are customized completely for you. We will work together (even meeting in person beforehand if you’d like) to choose a location, your outfits, and the photography products that work best for your family. You will never be left waiting or rushed. We spend as much time as needed making sure your images are retouched to perfection, even zooming in to remove stray hairs, blemishes, dry skin, stains, and even lint from shirts. We provide images that can be printed up to 60 inches wide without a single flaw.
So if you are looking for more than a quick and inexpensive photography experience, contact us today to start planning the photography session that is perfect for your family.
